Many people ask us why we got into innkeeping. Our story involves Napa and Sonoma County in California and our love of wine. We would spend a week each Fall touring the various wineries while staying at our favorite B&B in the area, the Raford House. We always said that if California were not so far away from our friends and family, we would have loved owning a B&B in the region.
Fast forward twelve years and we are now sending out guests off on a much smaller, but equally enjoyable, wine trail in Cape May County. The only problem is that the guests get to go and we stay behind at the Inn. Today was different - Bill and I had an opportunity to sneak away from the Inn this afternoon. We went to one of the four vineyards in Cape May County - Hawk Haven Vineyard. They were providing a rare opportunity to do some barrel tasting of their 2009 Syrah and Merlot wines. (These varietals of an earlier vintage were used in their latest release, Talon.) While young, it is always a treat to taste wine before it has been bottled and to then taste it again in the bottle. Of course, we did not stop there as we enjoyed several other wines they had available for tasting. For those who would like to enjoy a barrel tasting, Hawk Haven is doing it again February 26th and 27th.
In addition to enjoying the wines, we learned that the owner is a third generation "steward" of this land. We applaud his efforts to bring out the very best from this land. We look forward to enjoying the "fruits of his labor" in the years ahead.
