9/11 Ceremony in the Wildwoods

We were honored to attend a ceremony for 9/11 yesterday.  The Patriot Flag, which was made to honor all those who were lost that fateful day, is traveling the country before the 10th anniversary of the terrorists attacks.  it is huge - 30 feet by 55.5 feet.  During the ceremony, we heard from first responders and those who lost loved ones in the World Trade Center.  It was moving and very patriotic.

The ceremony was held in our Convention Center.  Immediately across from the Convention Center is the smaller version of the Vietnam Wall that was erected last year to commemorate all those lost in the Vietnam Conflict.  Small town America seems to embrace patriotism with parades and special ceremonies such as this.

Organized by the Flag Man of Cape May County, Marvin Hume, this ceremony was moving and special and provided us all a time to reflect on 9/11 as we approach the 10 year anniversary.  If you are visiting from Memorial Day to Labor Day, you may want to attend a flag ceremony.  They are held each evening at Sunset Beach.  Every evening a flag that was once draped over the casket of a US serviceperson is lowered during a ceremony.  It is a wonderful event to end a beautiful day enjoying all this great country has to offer.

More Reasons to Visit the Wildwoods

In 2010, the Wildwoods received recognition for their boardwalk, 50s Doo-Wop architecture, and beaches.  The Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce highlights all the information in the Wildwoods 2011 Vacation Planner. and Sherman's Travel voted our Boardwalk as one of the top 10 in America.  The two-mile boardwalk includes lots of eateries, shopping, arcades, and more rides than Disneyland.  And, do not forget the famous tram car, the Sightseeer.  One visit to the area and you will never forget the words, "Watch the tram car, please."

AOL named the Wildwoods Doo-Wop architecture as one of AOL's Architectural Wonders of the United States.  The area boasts the largest concentration of mid-century architecture in the country.  Doo-Wop tours are scheduled throughout the season.

Perhaps, most importantly to everyone who comes to this area is the fact that the Wildwoods won the #1 ranking for their beaches sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, New Jersey Sea Grant, and the Richard Stockton College Coastal Research Center.  In addition to the overall award, the Wildwoods won every 2010 Special Category award - Best Beach for Family Vacation, Best Beach for Tourism, Best Beach for Events, and Best Beach for Ecotourism.

So, it is time to book your stay in the Wildwoods and stay at the Candlelight Inn B&B, which also won in 2010 as Select Registry's Innkeepers of the Year.

Signs of Spring and Dreams of Summer at the New Jersey Shore

Today, I received notice of plans for my 40th High School Reunion from Wagner H.S.  I cannot be that old, can I??  On top of that, I was so excited to see my elementary school, P.S. 22 in Staten Island, NY, sing at the Oscars and on the Oprah Show.  It brought back so many wonderful memories.

One of those memories was the "early" Spring visit to the beach.  The first Saturday in March that made us feel that Spring was not far away, we would pile into a car and drive to the beach.  We would walk the boardwalk and just imagine being crowded together with everyone during our summer evening strolls.  We would look longingly at the boarded up shops and laugh about what the "new" phrases would be on all the t-shirts and how good the funnel cake would taste when summer arrived.  We would look to our favorite rides and imagine the thrills and hear the screams that would accompany each of those rides.  Those were special times with friends that I cherish to this day.

Why not look forward to summer with an early visit to the beach this March.  It is a season of anticipation of all the fun that is ahead of us this summer.
